What is Stacks?

Stacks is a blockchain solution designed to bring smart contracts and decentralized applications (DApps) to Bitcoin (BTC). Apps built on Stacks inherit all of Bitcoin’s powers. Since Stacks generally uses Bitcoin as base layer, everything happening on the network is settled on most widely used & arguably the most secure blockchain in operation which is Bitcoin. The platform is powered by a token named Stacks(STX), which is used to fuel the execution of smart contracts, process transactions, and register new digital assets on the Stacks blockchain. The platform was originally known as Blockstack but was rebranded to Stacks in Q4 of 2020

The Team Behind Stacks

In the beginning Stacks was funded by a range of major venture capital funds, including Digital Currency Group, Y Combinator, & Winklevoss Capital. Development by Blockstack PBC, which has its headquarters in New York. Blockstack PBC now operates under Hiro Systems PBC and joins a wide range of companies building on Stacks' platform. Muneeb Ali and Ryan Shea founded Blockstack PBC. Muneeb Ali graduated from Princeton University with an MA & Ph.D. in computer science, co-founded Stacks in 2013 and has been working with the platform today as the CEO of Hiro Systems PBC. The 2nd co-founder of the platform, Ryan Shea, also served as co-CEO between 2013 & 2018 before disembarking from the project to pursue other projects & ventures
